effective October 13, 1999
updated August 1, 2000
The CS core course requirement has changed. CS 410 goes away and both CS 211 and CS 312 (formerly 212) are required:
Old Core-Course Requirement: |
100 | (211 or 212) + 410 |
280 | 314 | 222 | 414 | 381 | 482 |
New Core-Course Requirement: |
100 | 211 + 312 |
280 | 314 | 222 | 414 | 381 | 482 |
1. To make this possible the material in CS 410 (Data Structures) is absorbed into CS 211 and CS 482. CS 211 becomes a prerequisite for CS 312.
2. The only course significantly changed by all this is CS 312. Functional programming will remain central to CS 312, but the course will be modified to exploit the CS 211 prerequisite. The "new CS 312 was offered for the first time during the Spring 2000 semester (but was still numbered 212). Consequently, it is now closed to students who have not yet taken CS 211.
3. Students who completed CS 212 by Spring 2000 are allowed to "live" under the old core course requirement if they completed CS 410 before it disappeared.
4. All other students should start their CS coursework with one of the following progressions:

B1 bumps 414 to the senior year and is discouraged. B2 is recommended for students who receive less than an A- in 211. B4 should only be followed by very strong, mathematically-inclined students who have adequate space in the freshman schedule. |

When to take 280 is an issue even though it is not a prerequisite for 312. Students who need to uplift their logical powers should follow C1 or C2. On the other hand, the 312 programming experience can serve as a great motivator for 280 making C3 and C4 attractive. | |

5. CS 211 and CS 280 should be completed by the end of the third semester for students who wish to affiliate with the CS major.
