The most beautiful smile in the wild world

![]() I am a Computer Science graduate student at Cornell University. I was born in a small town of Thailand and got most of my education in Bangkok. My mom always insisted me to become a doctor; a surgeon particularly. But, what a heck, since we already have 2 doctors in our family, I decided to be an engineer. People said Engineer is cool. Oh man, I really enjoy being one.... |
In
1989, I got my bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from Chulalongkorn
university. I started my career as a maintenance engineer in
a big cement plant. I, of course, learned a lot at the beginning.
However, after six months, life turned to be so boring working with the
same system every days. That how I discovered myself that the software
design is the right thing to me. I quit that company and joined ABB
company which mainly do system design for industrial plants.
I got less salary but I was much happier at what I did.
With that company, I had been assigned to work around the world as a software engineer. Last count is 15 countries so far. My main duty was to design the control system for heavy industry such as cement plant, steel plant, iron-ore mining and paper mill. Traveling was great. Every time I came home, I always got lots of stories to tell friends of mine. I had a chance to experience various cultures and meet many people from different countries having different backgrounds, attitudes and speaking strange languages I could not imagine how they understood each other. I used to work in a place where temperature differed 30 degC between day and night. That was just right in the middle of desert (Kerman, Iran). My most favorite place is still Switzerland. Maybe, because I stayed there more than a year. People were great and the place was just beautiful. China was also a very interesting country. You might have heard the biggest dam in the world which is being constructed in China. The cement that they used to build the dam came from the plant (Ge Zhou Ba) I started up. The longest place I stayed was in Singapore. That was almost 4 years. You know Singapore has the most expensive car in the world; about 5 to 10 times of what you pay in the states. Besides, you can drive it for only 10 years. Funny, isn't it? Design the control system for the real plant was really fun. It felt like you had some kind of power making huge machines doing what you wanted. Really cool! But then again, I reached the dead end and wanted to go even deeper than that. I wanted to design a computer tool or software that people will use it to design the control system. To be able to do that, I must have a very good knowledge about computer. That was how I ended up here at Cornell. I heard it is a great school especially in computer science field and I am not disappointed at all. I really learned lots of new things. I am now helping Dr. Werner Vogels (Horus/Ensembler group) doing the research with WinNT operating system. I do not know what I am going to do next after my graduation. I may go to work in the industry or continue doing research. Anything will be just fine for me. Well, at least for the time being. |
