PREVIOUS DISCUSSIONS and RATING SYSTEM
Check out some of the books we've discussed in the past, as well as our rating system and ratings for those books.

April 2001 -- Plainsong by Kent Haruf
A story of the various characters and events that make up a year in the life of a small town.

May 2001 -- Mansfield Park by Jane Austin
A comedy rife with adultery, betrayal, social ruin, ruptured friendships and, of course, a healthy dose of Austin's patented, gentle satire. (paraphrased from amazon.com)

The Books and Cooks Reading Group was formed in May of 1998. We are a group of several Ithaca-area people who meet once a month to discuss a piece of literature and whatever else that discussion leads to. We also usually end up with lots food, since most of us like to cook, eat, and share — hence the name.

NEWS: A new book makes it into our list of top ranked reads: Behind the Scenes at the Museum by Kate Atkinson.

NEWS: Books and Cooks West starts off with a bang!

Our reading group choices vary widely, from Gabriel Garcia Marquez to Margaret Atwood to Toni Morrison. We occasionally read light fun books like Rebecca Wells’ Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, and we’ve also been known to tackle award-winning "serious" novels like Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children. We’ll also occasionally delve into a nonfiction piece, although we tend to lean towards fiction.

Similarly, the kind of food we cook varies widely. Most of us like to experiment, and we’re all willing to be experimented on! One month we had a picnic, another tea and crumpets. One month everyone brought soup. We put together Thanksgiving dinners in both November of ‘98 and November of '99. But sometimes we just stick to cheese and crackers. Several of us are wanna-be wine snobs (or cork dorks) so we like to try different (yet inexpensive) wines from time to time as well.

We choose our monthly selections by soliciting suggestions from members and then discussing the suggestions at the meetings. Most of our organizational and logistical issues are sorted out over e-mail. We usually order our books from a local independent bookseller: The Bookery, which is also online at www.thebookery.com. Several of us use Amazon.com as a source for suggestions, reviews, and information about books. We all also participate in The Biblia Files, an online book discussion mailing list separate from Books and Cooks but with a healthy overlap in participants. We all wish we had more time to read and to cook.

Watch these pages for our recipe archive/newsletter. It will be converted to html and published here eventually.
