3/4  "It's so good that you can practically see the Hollywood 'suits' trying to put together the cast and filmmaking team for the all-too -inevitable American remake."
-- Jeff Vice, DESERET NEWS, SALT LAKE CITY

B+  "Both heartbreaking and heartwarming...just a simple fable done in an artless sytle, but it's tremendously moving."
-- Frank Swietek, ONE GUY'S OPINION

B+  "Writer/director Jeong-hyang Lee, in only her second feature, establishes a situation rife with gentle humor and honest, unaffected love."
-- Eric D. Snider, ERICDSNIDER.COM

'3.5/5'  "The Way Home is an ode to unconditional love and compassion garnered from years of seeing it all, a condition only the old are privy to, and...often misconstrued as weakness."
-- Anita Schmaltz, METRO TIMES

6/10  "So saccharine, I'm not sure I'd be able to take it under normal conditions."
-- Jon Popick, PLANET SICK-BOY

7/10  "Everyone should be able to appreciate the wonderful cinematography and naturalistic acting."
-- Michael Phillips, CITYSEARCH

B  "As a tearjerker this works pretty well, though long before it gets to work on your tear ducts, it starts to eat away at your nerves."
-- Eugene Novikov, FILM BLATHER

"[The kid's] just too bratty for sympathy, and as the film grows to its finale, his little changes ring hollow."
-- Kim Morgan, OREGONIAN

  "A conventional if appealing tear-jerker."
-- Paul Malcolm, L.A. WEEKLY

"Lee Jeong-Hyang tells it so lovingly and films it so beautifully that I couldn't help being captivated by it."
-- Jean Lowerison, SAN DIEGO METROPOLITAN

5/5  "...could easily be called the best Korean film of 2002."
-- Anthony Leong, MEDIACIRCUS

3/5  "It’s obviously struck a responsive chord with many South Koreans, and should work its magic in other parts of the world."
-- Darrin Keene, FILM THREAT

2.5/4  "The film occasionally tries the viewer's patience with slow pacing and a main character who sometimes defies sympathy, but it ultimately satisfies with its moving story."
-- Pam Grady, REEL.COM

2/4  "A well acted and well intentioned snoozer."
-- Steve Rhodes, STEVE RHODES' INTERNET REVIEWS

"like to think of the film as Local Hero for Kids, as the boy has to adapt from his urban kid lifestyle to the slow, simple ways of generations before. Will he do it? Will it work out? Can love overcome?"
-- David Poland, HOT BUTTON

3.5/5  "The simplicity of The Way Home has few equals this side of Aesop"
-- Christopher Null, FILMCRITIC.COM

2.5/5  "it may play well as a double feature with mainstream foreign mush like My Big Fat Greek Wedding"
-- John A. Nesbit, CULTUREDOSE.NET

3/4  "Not only is it a charming, funny and beautifully crafted import, it uses very little dialogue, making it relatively effortless to read and follow the action at the same time."
-- Margaret A. McGurk, CINCINNATI ENQUIRER

3.5/5  "A tender, heartfelt family drama."
-- Wade Major, BOXOFFICE MAGAZINE

1.5/5  "Do we really need another film that praises female self-sacrifice?"
-- Kim Linekin, EYE WEEKLY

A-  "An uncluttered, resonant gem that relays its universal points without lectures or confrontations."
-- Ellen Kim, SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER

2.5/4  "It's not revolutionary, but it's satisfying."
-- Chris Hewitt, ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS

  "An Asian neo-realist treasure."
-- Maria Garcia, FILM JOURNAL INTERNATIONAL

B+  "Eul-Boon Kim's soulful portrayal of the illiterate, deaf-mute grandmother illuminates the dignity of her demeanor and the sad resignation in her eyes."
-- Philip Wuntch, DALLAS MORNING NEWS

  "Punitively affirmational parable."
-- Jessica Winter, VILLAGE VOICE

3/4  "Director Lee has a true cinematic knack, but it's also nice to see a movie with its heart so thoroughly, unabashedly on its sleeve."
-- Michael Wilmington, CHICAGO TRIBUNE

3.5/5  "A loving little film of considerable appeal."
-- Kevin Thomas, LOS ANGELES TIMES

2.5/5  "The story, touching though it is, does not quite have enough emotional resonance or variety of incident to sustain a feature, and even at 85 minutes it feels a bit long."
-- A.O. Scott, NEW YORK TIMES

B-  "The movie is saved from unbearable lightness by the simplicity of the storytelling and the authenticity of the performances."
-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

  "A beautifully observed character piece."
-- Michael Rechtshaffen, HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

3.5/4  "Jeong-Hyang Lee's film is deceptively simple, deeply satisfying."
-- Steven Rea, PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER

2/5  "While certain cues, like the happy music, suggest that this movie is supposed to warm our hearts, Jeong-Hyang Lee's film is just as likely to blacken that organ with cold vengefulness."
-- Geoff Pevere, TORONTO STAR

3.5/4  "Thanks to confident filmmaking and a pair of fascinating performances, the way to that destination is a really special walk in the woods."
-- Janice Page, BOSTON GLOBE

2.5/4  "A sentimental hybrid that could benefit from the spice of specificity."
-- Duane Dudek, MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL
