SYNOPSIS
Directed by Sam Mendes and based on the graphic novel by Max Allan Collins and Richard Piers Rayner, the Depression-era crime epic ROAD TO PERDITION stars Tom Hanks as Michael Sullivan, a quiet hit man who is duty bound to Mafia boss John Rooney (Paul Newman). The mobster's close bond with Sullivan, however, leads Rooney's jealous blood son, Connor (Daniel Craig), to orchestrate a tragic series of events that results in Sullivan on the run with his 12-year-old son, Michael Jr. (Tyler Hoechlin). Soon an unscrupulous crime photographer/assassin named Maguire (Jude Law) is sent after Sullivan and his son, and Sullivan must decide on a course of action as young Michael comes to terms with his father's violent way of life. more...

"It's slow -- very, very slow. It's not the ultimate Depression-era gangster movie. That's pure PR hype."
-- Victoria Alexander, FILMSINREVIEW.COM

"Stage director Sam Mendes showcases Tom Hanks as a depression era hit-man in this dark tale of revenge."
-- Boo Allen, DENTON RECORD CHRONICLE (TX)

3/4  "Road to Perdition does display greatness, and it's worth seeing. But it also comes with the laziness and arrogance of a thing that already knows it's won."
-- Jeffrey M. Anderson, SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER

1/4  "Slow, dry, poorly cast, but beautifully shot."
-- Ross Anthony, HOLLYWOOD REPORT CARD

B+  "For all its defects, the movie has a hypnotic, terrible beauty."
-- William Arnold, SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER

3.5/4  "Gran historia sobre el amor, la familia, la lealtad y la traición que seguramente se convertirá en un nuevo clásico del género."
-- Jorge Avila Andrade, MOVIOLA

A-  "In many ways, reminiscent of 1992’s Unforgiven which also utilized the scintillating force of its actors to draw out the menace of its sparse dialogue."
-- Bruce Bennett, SPECTRUM (ST. GEORGE, UTAH)

3.5/4  "In a summer overrun with movies dominated by CGI aliens and super heroes, it revigorates the mind to see a feature that concentrates on people, a project in which the script and characters hold sway."
-- Bob Bloom, JOURNAL AND COURIER (LAFAYETTE, IN)

"Scorsese at his best makes gangster films that are equally lovely but also relentlessly brutal and brutally intelligent; Perdition, meanwhile, reads more like Driving Miss Daisy than GoodFellas."
-- Josef Braun, VUE WEEKLY (EDMONTON, CANADA)

3.5/4  "For all its visual panache and compelling supporting characters, the heart of the film rests in the relationship between Sullivan and his son."
-- Matt Brunson, CREATIVE LOAFING

"Una película oscura, precisa, por momentos grandiosa y casi siempre conmovedora."
-- Enrique Buchichio, URUGUAY TOTAL

"Superbly photographed and staged by Mendes with a series of riveting set pieces the likes of which mainstream audiences have rarely seen."
-- Robert W. Butler, KANSAS CITY STAR

C+  "The corpse count ultimately overrides what little we learn along the way about vicarious redemption."
-- Jim Chastain, NORMAN TRANSCRIPT

"'Yes, that's right: it's Forrest Gump, Angel Of Death.'"
-- Paul Arendt, TELETEXT (UK)

3/4  "No sophomore slump for director Sam Mendes, who segues from Oscar winner to Oscar-winning potential with a smooth sleight of hand."
-- Jeanne Aufmuth, PALO ALTO WEEKLY

4/4  "The film is quiet, threatening and unforgettable."
-- Joe Baltake, SACRAMENTO BEE

2.5/4  "While the picture’s mood is inspired by the independent spirit of 1970s crime dramas, it’s been given a send-’em-home-smiling, corporate Hollywood scrubbing clean."
-- Rob Blackwelder, SPLICEDWIRE

4/5  "Visually fascinating ... an often intense character study about fathers and sons, loyalty and duty."
-- Liz Braun, JAM! MOVIES

5/5  "It’s the best film of the year so far, the benchmark against which all other Best Picture contenders should be measured."
-- Jeffrey Bruner, DES MOINES REGISTER

"A rigorously structured and exquisitely filmed drama about a father and son connection that is a brief shooting star of love."
-- Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, SPIRITUALITY AND HEALTH

"Sam Mendes has become valedictorian at the School for Soft Landings and Easy Ways Out."
-- Sean Burns, PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY

3/4  "Cinephiles will appreciate the fine camerawork and overall mise-en-scene, but people just heading out for a popcorn pleaser will likely be disappointed."
-- Gina Carbone, SEACOAST NEWSPAPERS (NH/MAINE)

2.5/4  "Suffers from its timid parsing of the barn-side target of sons trying to breach gaps in their relationships with their fathers."
-- Walter Chaw, FILM FREAK CENTRAL

Hot Pick
5/5  "Fathers and sons, and the uneasy bonds between them, rarely have received such a sophisticated and unsentimental treatment on the big screen as they do in this marvelous film."
-- Jay Boyar, ORLANDO SENTINEL

3/4  "Serious movie-goers embarking upon this journey will find that The Road to Perdition leads to a satisfying destination."
-- James Berardinelli, JAMES BERARDINELLI'S REELVIEWS

"Feels strangely hollow at its emotional core."
-- Paul Clinton, CNN

3/4  "After I saw Road to Perdition, I knew I admired it, but I didn't know if I liked it. I am still not sure. It is cold and holds us outside."
-- Roger Ebert, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES

B+  "You can almost see Mendes and company getting together before a single frame had been shot and collectively vowing, 'This is going to be something really good.' And it is."
-- Eleanor Ringel Gillespie, ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION

A+  "The most brilliant work in this genre since the 1984 uncut version of Sergio Leone's flawed but staggering Once Upon a Time in America."
-- Eric Harrison, HOUSTON CHRONICLE

"Mendes still doesn't quite know how to fill a frame. Like the Hanks character, he's a slow study: The action is stilted and the tabloid energy embalmed."
-- J. Hoberman, VILLAGE VOICE

5/5  "It inspires a continuing and deeply satisfying awareness of the best movies as monumental 'picture shows.'"
-- Stephen Holden, NEW YORK TIMES

"A rock-solid gangster movie with a fair amount of suspense, intriguing characters and bizarre bank robberies, plus a heavy dose of father-and-son dynamics."
-- Kirk Honeycutt, HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

"Despite the surface attractions -- Conrad L. Hall's cinematography will likely be nominated for an Oscar next year -- there's something impressive and yet lacking about everything."
-- Desson Howe, WASHINGTON POST

"All in all, Road to Perdition is more in love with strangeness than excellence."
-- Stephen Hunter, WASHINGTON POST

8/10  "Such a good-looking picture deserved to have more depth and unpredictability in its story. But it does stand out as a personal and unique entry in a time-worn genre, and that may be good enough."
-- Jeffrey Chen, WINDOW TO THE MOVIES
