SYNOPSIS
Peter Mattei's depressing, bleakly humorous drama paints a grim portrait of life in the big city. The film follows nine confused and desperate New Yorkers who are looking for love in all the wrong places: an inexperienced prostitute (Vera Farmiga), a troubled contractor (Domenick Lombardozzi), an unstable housewife (Jill Hennessy), her repressed husband (Malcolm Gets), a smitten artist (Steve Buscemi), a beautiful gallery worker (Rosario Dawson), her free-spirited boyfriend (Adrien Grenier), a lonely psychic (Carol Kane), and a suicidal businessman (Michael Imperioli). As these characters listlessly bump into and out of one another's lives, it becomes painfully clear just how desperate they are to make a connection. more...

-- Luke Y. Thompson, DALLAS OBSERVER

B  "The film was immensely enjoyable thanks to great performances by both Steve Buscemi and Rosario Dawson..."
-- Dennis Schwartz, OZUS' WORLD MOVIE REVIEWS

1/4  "I'm sure the filmmakers found this a remarkable and novel concept, but anybody who has ever seen an independent film can report that it is instead a cheap cliché."
-- Connie Ogle, MIAMI HERALD

3.5/5  "It is a great character study that ranks with Paul Thomas Anderson's epic Magnolia."
-- Anthony Miele, FILM THREAT

2/4  "An undistinguished attempt to make a classic theater piece cinematic."
-- Harvey S. Karten, COMPUSERVE

"Mattei so completely loses himself to the film's circular structure to ever offer any insightful discourse on, well, Love in the Time of Money."
-- Ed Gonzalez, SLANT MAGAZINE

"The film ultimately offers nothing more than people in an urban jungle needing other people to survive..."
-- Dan Fienberg, L.A. WEEKLY

"Watchable up until the point where the situations and the dialogue spin hopelessly out of control -- that is to say, when Carol Kane appears on the screen."
-- Curtis Edmonds, TXREVIEWS.COM

48/100  "Absurdities and clichés accumulate like lint in a fat man's navel."
-- Mike D'Angelo, TIME OUT NEW YORK

-- Frank Swietek, ONE GUY'S OPINION

8/10  "The riveting performances by the incredibly flexible cast make Love a joy to behold."
-- Erich Scholz, CITYSEARCH

2/4  "Mattei's underdeveloped effort here is nothing but a convenient conveyor belt of brooding personalities that parade about as if they were coming back from Stock Character camp -- a drowsy drama infatuated by its own pretentious self-examination."
-- Frank Ochieng, MOVIE EYE

1.5/5  "Anemic chronicle of money grubbing New Yorkers and their serial loveless hook ups."
-- Maitland McDonagh, TV GUIDE'S MOVIE GUIDE

1.5/4  "If this is an example of the type of project that Robert Redford's lab is willing to lend its imprimatur to, then perhaps it's time to rethink independent films."
-- Pam Grady, REEL.COM

B-  "An intriguing cinematic omnibus and round-robin that occasionally is more interesting in concept than in execution."
-- Marshall Fine, JOURNAL NEWS

3/5  "There has been a string of ensemble cast romances recently ... but Peter Mattei's Love in the Time of Money sets itself apart by forming a chain of relationships that come full circle to end on a positive (if tragic) note."
-- Annlee Ellingson, BOXOFFICE MAGAZINE

2.5/5  "The parts are better than the whole (bizarre, funny, tragic - like love in New York)."

4/10  "Will probably be one of those movies barely registering a blip on the radar screen of 2002."

-- Megan Turner, NEW YORK POST

C+  "The overall fabric is hypnotic, and Mr. Mattei fosters moments of spontaneous intimacy."
-- Tom Sime, DALLAS MORNING NEWS

2/4  "Despite a blue-chip cast and a provocative title, writer-director Peter Mattei's first feature microwaves dull leftover romantic motifs basted in faux-contemporary gravy."

-- A.O. Scott, NEW YORK TIMES

D+  "A workshop mentality prevails."
-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

-- Andrew Sarris, NEW YORK OBSERVER

"Despite impeccable acting ... and a script that takes some rather unexpected (even, at times, preposterous) turns, Love is just too, too precious in the end."
-- Michael O'Sullivan, WASHINGTON POST

1/4  "The problems of the people in Love in the Time of Money are hardly specific to their era. They just have problems, which are neither original nor are presented in convincing way."
-- Mick LaSalle, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

  "Too clever by about nine-tenths."
-- Stephen Hunter, WASHINGTON POST
