Undergraduate Awards IBM Undergraduates in Computational Science Award A $3,000 award given to an undergraduate Cornell student who is doing research in computational science. This is an annual award established through IBM's Unversity Partnership Program and is administered by the Cornell Theory Center. Computational science can be broadly defined as the search for the solution to scientific and engineering challenges through the use of computing and related technologies. These related technologies include digital communication, computer graphics and many aspects of computer science and applied mathematics. To nominate a Cornell student for the IBM Undergraduates in Computational Science Award, submit a letter of nomination to the Cornell Theory Center. The letter should include: name of the student; field of study; expected date of graduation; home address of the student; description of computational work; references to web pages or publications describing the work; and a statement in support of the student's outstanding accomplishments. Nominations will be reviewed by the Director of the Cornell Theory Center and members of the CTC executive committee. The award will be announced in September. The deadline for nominations is June 1.
The Microsoft Fellowship Award A single, merit-based award of $1,500 is given to an outstanding member of the junior class in Computer Science. Award winners will have shown promise through their involvement in the creation of innovative software or systems design in the laboratory, on the job, or through independent efforts. Applicants will be required to submit a brief description of their work. Applications are typically due late in the fall semester.
The Jonathan E. Marx Cornell Tradition Fellowships Jonathan E. Marx Cornell Tradition Fellowships of up to $4,000 each are awarded annually to qualified computer science majors. To be eligible, students must satisfy the following: - Be a computer science major
- Apply and be awarded the Cornell Tradition Fellowship
- Demonstrate a commitment to work, scholarship, and leadership
The Jonathan E. Marx Cornell Tradition Fellowship available to students who apply and are awarded the Cornell Tradition fellows program. The amount is $4000 per year for students who are part of the Tradition Fellowship program. The award is given to a student in Cornell Tradition and in Computer Science. Please visit the Commitment Office for an application.
The Jonathan E. Marx Memorial Senior Prize Each year, prizes of $500 each are awarded to two graduating seniors in computer science. To qualify, candidates must maintain a 3.0 grade point average, be considered friendly and helpful, show leadership qualities, and have been involved in extracurricular activities, both in and outside of computer science. Seniors who wish to be considered for the prize should submit a short (one page or less) statement of their achievements and activities to the CS Undergraduate Office in 303 Upson Hall in late April. Prizes are awarded at the Computer Science graduation reception on Commencement Day.
The Alan S. Marx Prize for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Support The Alan S. Marx Prize recognizes a graduating senior who has demonstrated excellence and commitment in supporting undergraduate teaching activities in the Department of Computer Science. Recipients are selected from those students who assisted with teaching undergraduate CS courses, as consultants, graders, or undergraduate teaching assistants. Recipients of the prize will receive a check for $500 and an engraved plaque.
The Computer Science Prize for Academic ExcellenceThe Computer Science Prize for Academic Excellence is in recognition of a senior in the field of computer science who has performed exceptionally well academically and who has shown a strong commitment to the ideals of the educational mission at Cornell. Special consideration will be given to those students who have displayed an interest in research and who plan to eventually pursue doctoral level studies.
