Graduate Study for Computer Science Undergraduates

Ph.D. Study

| CS department Ph.D. Home Page |

Cornell's undergraduate program in CS is widely recognized as one of the best in the country and the faculty all have international reputations. This gives the CS Major interested in graduate study a real advantage when applying to the top PhD programs. Students with these ambitions should enroll in graduate-level CS courses before the eighth semester so that strong letters of recommendation can be obtained. A solid record of undergraduate research through CS 490 is also important. Follow these links for information about some of the best places for PhD study in computer science:

Brown University Princeton University University of Maryland
Brandeis RPI University of Michigan
Cal Tech Rice University University of Minnesota
Carnegie Mellon University RIT Univ. of North Carolina
Columbia University Rutgers University of Oregon
Cornell University Stanford University University of Pennsylvania
Dartmouth College SUNY Binghamton University of Texas
Duke University SUNY Stony Brook University of Toronto
George Washington Univ UC Berkeley University of Washington
Georgia Tech UC San Diego University of Waterloo
Harvard UCLA University of Wisconsin
Johns Hopkins University University of Colorado William and Mary
MIT University of Edinburgh Yale University
NYU University of Illinois
Oxford College U. Mass Amherst

Applications to the Cornell Computer Science PhD program are generally discouraged because the student is usually better attending a different school for the sake of breadth. However, it is instructive to browse through our Ph.D. program pages to see what is involved in such a rigorous course of study. Each year in the Fall the ACSU holds an information session with faculty about applying to graduate school. Faculty who are familiar with your interests and academic record can help you with the selection of appropriate graduate schools.

Master of Engineering Study

The M.Eng. program in Computer Science is a one-year (two semester) professional development program designed to enhance professional skills in practical computer science. The program is particularly suited to students seeking advanced credentials for employment in industry.

Typically, an M.Eng. student takes several advanced courses and completes a faculty-supervised project in an area such as multimedia, networks, distributed and parallel computing, databases, scientific computing, software engineering, graphics or artificial intelligence.

The program is course intensive and requires a design project with a written report rather than a formal research thesis. Through careful and individualized curriculum planning, the program accommodates students from a wide variety of backgrounds who seek advanced training in a multiplicity of different subjects.

The M.Eng Program allows much flexibility in course selection which provides students the opportunity to tailor their program to accentuate their interest in traditional Computer Science areas as well as complementary areas from Electrical Engineering to Business Administration.

The time and effort devoted to improving technical knowledge and skills is an important investment that continues to be highly valued by industry.

Cornell undergraduates may take advantage of our Early Admission option to the M.Eng. program. This option allows a student to enroll as an M.Eng. student and begin working toward an M.Eng. degree during the final semester of his/her undergraduate studies. The MEng is tailor-made for graduates of the Cornell undergraduate CS program because all of the right prerequisite courses will have been completed. Moreover, a strong record of independent study through CS 490 can lead to a particularly rich MEng project.

Students within eight credits of completing their Bachelors can be dual-enrolled in the MEng program. With careful planning and sufficient AP credit it is possible to complete the Bachelors and MEng after nine semesters. A sample schedule shows what is involved.

For more details go to the MEng home page.
