* A grade of C- or better in any course required for CS electives, including the Math Elective, the Technical Elective and courses in the area of specialization.

Procedure for Arts Students

Seventh-Semester Check-Up Form

During the next-to-last semester of study (typically the 7th Semester) you should complete the Seventh Semester Check-up, the purpose of which is to identify any potential problems prior to your final semester.

On this form, you will need to explicitly specify your elective courses for the major (Math, Technical and Specialization, etc.) and alert the Undergraduate Office to any issues that might effect your degree status. This check up requires careful scrutiny of the entire CS major checklist, including all degree requirements in Arts and Sciences. Submission of this form does not constitute any kind of official approval of electives or other requirements, it is merely a means of self-review and communication to the field office. It is your responsibility to make sure that all degree requirements are being met. Final certification of your degree will depend entirely on whether or not you have met all of the requirements specified by the College and the Major.

You will need to obtain a current copy of your personal CS major checklist from 303 Upson Hall. That checklist represents our understanding of your degree progress to date, so you will need it when filling out the Check-Up form. Any problems, questions, omissions, or other types of errors need to be noted clearly on the Check-Up form.

The Undergraduate Office should be notified via email (ugrad "at" cs.cornell.edu) about any discrepancies or changes you think might need to be made on your checklist. If necessary, you may also elect to review your checklist with the Undergraduate Field Coordinator in 303 Upson.

Arts College Application to Graduate

In addition to the Seventh-Semester Check-Up Form, all students in the College of Arts and Sciences are required to submit, electronically an official Application to Graduate (Part 1:College Requirements and Part 2: Major Requirements). These e-forms must be completed and submitted during the next to last semester.

After completing the Part 1 portion of the Application to Graduate, students need to set up a time to complete the Part 2 portion with the CS Undergraduate Advising Coordinator in 303 Upson Hall.

Questions about any of these matters can be directed to:ugrad "at" cs.cornell.edu.

Graduating With Honors (Engineering)

For students entering Cornell Fall 2004 or after, graduating with honors in computer science requires:

* that you have qualified for Latin Honors in the Engineering College (basically a cumulative GPA >= 3.50)
* at least one CS course (at least 3 credit hours) at or above the 5000 level with a grade of A- or better; no seminar or 2-credit project courses.
* at least two semester-long 3-credit courses of CS 490/4999 (Independent Research) with a CS faculty member, with grades of A- or better each semester.

Latin Designations (appended to the degree), awarded by computer science for all who qualify as stated above, are based on the final cumulative GPA, as follows:

cum laude, 3.50 or above
magna cum laude, 3.75 or above
summa cum laude, 4.00 or above

Consult the Engineering College Handbook for more details on how Latin Honors are calculated for Engineering graduates. Honors courses may not be used to satisfy the CS 4000+ elective requirement, the CS project requirement, the math elective, the technical electives, the specialization, or advisor approved electives.

In essence, honors course work represents a depth of field work that is well beyond the minimum requirements needed to fulfill the major.

NOTE: Candidates for honors are required to email a message to ugrad "at" cs.cornell.edu stating that they would like to be considered for departmental honors. Students are required to be in the honors program for a minimum of two semesters prior to graduation. The deadline for receipt of messages requesting honors is October 15th for May and August candidates and March 15th for January candidates. The subject line of the message should read "HONORS CANDIDATE".
