Special Masters in Computer Science A Special Masters degree in Computer Science
is available to Ph.D. students in a field of science or
engineering*. Requirements: 1. 4 residence units
2. The student must have a Computer Science field member on
his/her special committee
3. Knowledge of CS 211 and CS 312 and CS 414/415.
4. Two of the following courses: CS 514 or CS 614, CS
611, CS 612, CS 632, CS 681.
5. In addition to the courses in 3 and 4, any two CS courses
numbered above 399. (Lecture/practicum pairs such
as CS 412/413, CS 432/433, CS 465/466 and CS 472/473 count
as one course.)
6. Passing an A-exam in a field of science or engineering.
7. Special
Master's Approval Form Administration: It is the responsibility of the student's
special committee to ensure that the requirements are satisfied.
The CS committee member will generally expect grades of
B+ or better in all coursework and a suitable demonstration
of understanding at the A-exam. (It is not necessary
for all course requirements to be satisfied at the time
of the A-exam)
Changes in the requirements require the unanimous approval
of the special committee.
When the special committee agrees that the requirements
have been satisfied, the approval form should be filled
out and a copy submitted to the Computer Science Graduate
Office in 4126 Upson Hall.
* These rules take effect for students starting
the Special Masters program in Fall 2002. Earlier, the degree
was only available for Math and Applied Math students. For
students who started previously, and are interested in the
earlier rules, please go to the CS Grad Office, 4126 Upson.
