Ancestors of Matilda L HUNTINGGeneration No. 11. Matilda L HUNTING, born March 21, 1847 in Lockport, Niagara Co, NY; died October 21, 1885 in Montrose, Chicago, Cook Co, IL. She was the daughter of 2. Moses Solomon HUNTING and 3. Josephine Jennett GOODWIN. She married (1) Mark H REYNOLDS October 28, 1869 in Lockport, Niagara Co, IL. He was the son of Gideon REYNOLDS and Martha TUCKER. Notes for Matilda L HUNTING: From Autograph Book of Matilda Hunting Dedicated April 30, 1864 It may be your privilege to move the world by reason and the stern logic of facts, but is it not rather yours to strengthen faith in your own perception and love of the beautiful instead? Alexander and Raphael have lived and conquered yet whose was the greater victory? One conquered by the force of arms; - the other by the spirit of beauty; one stamped his soul in blood, - the other in sunlight. (Love?) - Mattie - you may not catch and imitate the rosy light of the summer (cloud?) with a Raphael, or sweep the trembling lyre with a Mozart, or make the cold marble speak pleasure or stern agony; - but a far brighter page of the book of Life is open wherein it is yours to write. Painters are we all - of our own and others life scenes - scenes of whose gorgeous beauty Raphael never dreamed. It is ours to paint in glowing colors - Charity, Confidence and Holy Love so that when our work is done - though blotted here and there with many tears - God will approve. With great respect Yours - M. H. Reynolds ************ Letter written to Mattie Hunting: Nashville Tenn. June 12, 1864 Long, long ago I wrote to my dear friend at Lima hoping soon to be the joyful recipient of one of her ever welcome and interesting letters. But alas, my expectations were only a castle in the air for I have heard nothing from her since. Why is this delay? Has she forgotten me? I hope that is not so but that I may soon realize my expectations and from patient waiting suffer no loss. J.E. Pound Care Capt. J.C. Crane A.Q.M. U.S.A. To: Miss "Impersonation of selected things" Lima N.Y. ****** NEWSPAPER CLIPPING 'Matilda Hunting (Mrs Reynolds, now dead) a singer of twenty-five years ago, will be remembered by many. She had a voice of great beauty in quality and was a charming singer who always touched the hearts of her listeners. She was leading soprano in the First Presbyterian Church of this city for several years.... Miss 'Cornie' Hunting who died some twenty years ago, when quite young, gave great promise. She was a daughter of M.S.Hunting, formerly of this city, and a sister to 'Mattie' Hunting (Mrs. Reynolds) who recently died in Chicago. Montrose Died: October -- 1885, after a few days of struggling and terrible suffering from diphtheria, Mrs. Matilda A. Reynolds, leaving a husband and four small children, two boys and two girls, to mourn her loss. Such is the common announcement which conveys the intelligence of death to a listless world, or overwhelms with grief the bereaved and loving ones left behind to mourn the loss of one so amiable, so kind, so useful, so loving and self-sacrificing. The casual reader merely sees the name. He knows not who she is nor pauses to give it further thought. The more thoughtful experience pang as the tender words "leaving a husband and four small children, two boys and two girls to mourn her loss," is read. But to those who knew her the announcement strikes deep into the heart and brings back all the tender recollections of her womanly virtues, her sweet Christian character, her exalted piety, her devotion to family and friends, and all the sterling qualities that belonged to the credit side of her life and works, while those near and dear to her who were loving and beloved are bowed in sorrow and overwhelmed with grief at her loss. Mrs. Reynolds was born in Lockport N.Y. and enjoyed the benefit of a polished education, both classical and musical and possessing to a high degree...traits of character which go...the perfect woman, and ...thereto, and combining therewith the rare gift of vocal culture and intonation, she at once became the admired of all admirers, the favorite of all favorites and though...with praise, and deluged with flatery, her meekness of disposition was never counterpoised nor tarnished with vanity. Marrying at an early age, she cast her fortunes with her husband coming west, and settled with him at Irving Park, when she drew around her the local musical talent, as well as the best elements of society--and while she was the idol of her associates, she became unconsciously the beloved of the entire community. Her tender heart and benevolent disposition led her into dangers to which great strength and vitality must have succumbed. But always unmindful of self when to her duty pointed out the way and unwittingly exposed her..confronting dangers of disease? with calm.. Having just passed through a severe trial of watchfulness and care over her beloved Ralph, her youngest son, and being in an exhausted state of vitality, disease found an easy lodgment, and by exposure, she became the victim of malignant diphtheria, and a martyr to self-sacrificing benevolence, and has gone to reap her reward. Mortals weep at the loss of such an exemplary character, and angels weep at their grief; but they forgot not to bear the liberated spirit of one so pure, so angelicto its place of Heavenly rest, and the influences of her last words in holy council to those most dear to her, aided by her dearer and sweeter memory, magnified by her absence here, will exert a lasting and holy influence, and buoy the hopes of those who witnessed the closing scene, and stood in mute and silent grief at her bedside, while the struggling spirit, liberated from its frail and transcient tenement of clay, winged its way heavenward. We mourn the loss of the mother of our pupil and schoolmate, and with him we sorrow. Our sympathy is extended to the family, and in common with them and a large circle of acquaintances throughout our township we feel the loss of a public spirited, earnest working Christian. Notes for Fred Hunting REYNOLDS: Poem written by Fred Hunting Reynolds about his son Fred Hunting Reynolds Jr A WISH I watch with fear his little feet Uncertain - plunging by, So bravely onward, aimed to meet Some prize before his eye And heeding not his wish at all I stop the baby's joy, And halt his steps to guard a fall- He's such a little boy- And wondering thoughts come to me then Of what will be his fate, In later days when ways of men Will all in turn await His youthful moods, towards Plesure turned Without the curb of Fear, What huiding hand, so much concerned May keep his pathway clear? For when he treads life's later ways With dangers spread for men, And I have passed my earthly days, And could not aid him, then Perhaps no one in life's queer game There'll be at hand to care- No one with Love to help his arm Keep straight and true and fair. Or if I fail or guide him wrong towards paths with Evil rife, Or he give heed to Satan's song And make a waste of Life, What joy could fill eternity For me, if I should find That Fate has strangely brought me free But left his soul behind? Death may lay saving hands on him While yet his years are few Or I soon cross o'er Life's sharp rim Earth's future lost to view Then let me keep one vision clear If Heaven's rules allow- At Judgement hour, may he appear To me - as he is now. For when that reckoning Day begins, If ought be due to me Instead of pardon for my sins I'll only ask to see Come stumbling up the Path of Light To enter Heaven's joy- A little figure - smiling - bright Unchanged - my little Boy.

Moses S. Hunting died at the residence of his son, C. Fred Hunting, in the City of Chicago, Illinois, yesterday morning, November 11th 1898. Moses S Hunting was a son of Edward and Margaret (Kruver) Hunting, and was born in ULster County, New York, October 29th 1814. His paternal grandfather, Dr. Edward Hunting, was a native of England, where he practiced medicine for several years, and then came to New York about the opening of the Revolutionary War. His son Edward Hunting, was born in Ulster County in 1778, and at about 38 years of age removed to Tompkins County, where he died in 1861, in the 83rd year of his age. His wife Margaret Kruver was a native of Ulster County of German descent. Moses S Hunting grew to manhood on the farm, and attended the public schools of that day. He entered Hamilton College, from which he was graduated in the year 1838. After graduation, he read law with Horatio Ballard of Cortland, and George C Beers of Ithaca, New York and was admitted to the bar in May 1842. In that year he opened an office at Farmerville in Seneca County, where he practiced successfully for seven years. He then came to Niagara County, where he purchased a farm and was engaged for 15 years in farming and practicing his profession. At the end of that time, in 1864, he came to Lockport where he continued in active practice until a few years ago. when he retired. In political belief, Mr Hunting was a straight Democrat, and believed in the tenets of that party. He never was a candidate for office but once, and that was for the position of school commissioner, to which office he was elected by a good majority. He was married June 5th, 1845 to Josephine G. Goodwin, who died in 1884. To them were born four children, two sons and two daughters. Matilda (deceased), Ben Johnson (now dead) who was a graduate of Cornell University and after entering upon the practice of law, served one year as District Attorney of Niagara County, C. Fred, a real estate owner in the City of Chicago, Illinois, and Cornie M. (deceased). Mr. Hunting was a man of great reading, fine memory, and will long be remembered by those who knew him for the many pleasant attributes possessed by him. Funeral will be held at Grace Church, Monday morning, November 14th, 1898 at 11 o'clock. Friends are invited to attend. "Biography & History of Niagara County" Moses S. Hunting, a resident of Lockport and a member of the bar for nearly half a century, is a son of Edward and Margaret (Kruver) Hunting. and was born in Ulster county, New York, October 29, 1814. His paternal grandfather, Dr. Edward Hunting, was a native of England where he practiced medicine for several years, and then came to New York abouth the opening of the Revolutionary War. His son , Edward Hunting (father), was born in Ulster county in 1778, and at about thirty-eight years of age removed to Tompkins county, where he died in 1861, in the eighty-third year of his age. He was a farmer by occupation, and was drafted in the war of 1812 but procured a substitute. He was a Methodist in religious belief and church membership, while in political faith he had been originally a demorcrat, but when Fremont ran he voted for him and soon became a strong abolitionist. His wife, Margaret Kruver, a native of Ulster county and of German descent, bore him seven children, of whom two are living: Catherine, widow of a Mr. Jagger of Cortland county, where she now resides; and Moses S Hunting. Another son Israel Hunting, was a retired farmer living at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin , and died September 14, 1891, in the eighty-fourth year of his age. Moses S Hunting grew to manhood on the farm, and atteneded the public schools of that day. He entered Hamilton college, from which he was graduated in the class of 1888. After graduation he read law with Horatio Ballard, of Cortland, and George C Beers, of Ithaca, New York, and was admitted to the bar in May 1842. In that year he opened an office at Farmerville, in Seneca county, where he practiced successfully for seven years. He then came to Niagara county, where he purchased a farm, and was engaged for fifteen years in farming and practicing his profession. At the end of that time, in 1864, he came to Lockport, where he has remained ever since in active practice. He hives due attention and careful consideration to all of his cases, never neglects his client's interests, and enjos a ver good practice. Besides real estate and other property in this county, he has real estate interests in the great city of Chicago. In political belief Mr Hunting is a straight democrat who believes that the supremacy of American institutions, and the successful upholding of our National honor will be best attained under democratic administrations. Aside from his legal work to which he gives nearly all of his time he once and only once, allowed the use of his name as a candidate for the office of school commissioner, to which he was elected by a good majorit. Though taking a deep interest in political matters he is strongly averse to running for office, on account of the methods resorted to by candidates. On June 5, 1845, Mr Hunting married Josephine G Goodwin, who died in 1884. To them were born four children, two sons and two daughters; Matilda, (deceased); Ben Johnson (now dead), who was a graduate of Cornell university, and after entering upon the practice of law served one term as district attorney of Niagara county; C. Fred, a real estate owner and dealer in Chicago, Illinois; and Cornie M. (deceased). Hunting Lockport, May, 1842 CORRESPONDENCE TO DOROTHY REYNOLDS To: Miss Dorothy C Reynolds 204 S Ridgeland Ave Oak Park, IL From: Mr. George Curtis Lewis, Lawyer Savings Bank Building Lockport, N.Y. October 11, 1933 Madam: Your communication of October 4th to the Chamber of Commerce of Lockport with reference to family geneology has been referred to me, a Director of the Lockport Historical Society, for answer. I recall very well Mr. Moses S. Hunting, your maternal grandfather. When I commenced the study of the law in Lockport in 1885. He was one of the older members of the Bar, quite a fine looking old gentleman with white curly hair, who was still very vehement in his addresses to the jury, quoting Shakespeare and the classics and waiving his arms and gesticulating in the manner of the advocate of that day - a school that was passing away. He must have been an excellent lawyer in his time. Associated with him in business was his son, Benjamin J. Hunting - also a trial lawyer who was District Attorney of the County of Niagara 1877-1880. In the files of the Niagara County Clerk's Office are found the census reports for this city as of June 1, 1865. On Page eight of the volume of that report appears the following: Moses S. Hunting, Lawyer, age 47 Josephine " wife age 40 Matilda " child age 19 Benjamin " child age 17 Fred " child age 15 Cornelia " child age 10 It also appears from the records that Moses S Hunting and Josephine G. his wife conveyed various pieces of land so that you can establish another point of identification here with your grandmother - the G. in her name undoubtedly standing for "Goodwin". .......I am told, although I have not yet verified the fact, that the Hunting burial lot is in Glenwood Cemetery in this city.... Moses S. Hunting and his son, Benjamin J. died many years ago and I presume Mrs. Hunting also died because when I knew Moses S. Hunting he was a widower. I also recall that my aunt who was principal of an Intermediate School in this city for something like over fifty years was very fond of a particularly bright and beautiful girl who attended her school known as "Cornie" Hunting, who must have been the Cornelia who appears in the census report. She died a school girl. ....the Hunting name does not appear in the (Lockport) directory of 1859 and 1860. October 13th, 1933 Madam: ....I have learned that the markers on the Hunting lot in Glenwood Cemetery contain the following inscriptions: Moses S. Hunting, born 1814 died 1885 Mattie Reynolds died 1885 age 38 Cornie Hunting died 1873 age 17 Benjamin Hunting died 1886 age 36 These dates correspond with the Census report except that what I read as "47" should have been "41". October 18th, 1933 Dear Miss Reynolds: I was in the Grosvenor Library at Buffalo yesterday and ran across the brief biographical sketch of Moses S. Hunting in the Biographical and Portrait Cyc. of Niagara County published in 1892. It stated that he was the son of Edward and Margaret (Kruver) Hunting and was born in Ulster County, N.Y. October 29th, 1814. He was a graduate of Hamilton College in the class of '38, admitted to the Bar in 1842, came to Niagara County in 1849 and purchased and operated a farm for some years. Moved into Lockport in 1864 and opened a law office there. On Jone 5th, 1845 he married Josephine G. Goodwin, who died in 1884. Sources: 1. "Landmarks of Niagara Co NY Wm Poole 1897 2. Over the next years, Seneca County gained and/or lost land to Tompkins, Wayne, Ontario and Yates counties. It now comprises 390 square miles, is 156 miles from Albany (the State Capital of New York), and lays between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region. Sullivan's expedition, which passed along the banks of Seneca Lake in 1779, first brought the area to the attention of settlers. Many of the soldiers were so attracted by the beauty and fertility of the lands that they settled there after the war. The first settler, Job Smith, settled in Seneca Falls in 1787, and the second, Andrew Dunlap, settled in Ovid in 1789. After 1790, settlement progressed rapidly. The county was part of the extreme western portion of the Military Tract. Seneca County is a half-shire with the county seats located at Ovid and Waterloo. Other towns in Seneca County are Covert, Fayette, Junius, Lodi, Romulus, Seneca Falls, Tyre, and Varick. ********** Sources: 1. "The Kidder Genealogy" 2. Boston Transcript 12 June 1935 3. Eventually I became interested in the pedigree of the house...and one thing led to another. The Barnard and Carpenter homesites are only a few hundred feet from my old home. To figure out who built my house I had to plot the whole area. Several years later Janet Aronson and I received a grant for the town of Coventry to publish "The Roots of Coventry Connecticut" Library of Congress 87-070950 (1987) in which on page 11 is a map showing the proximity of the 2 families. Benjamin Carpenters wife was Hannah Strong...her mther was Freedom Woodward. families from Northampton were original settlers of Coventry. Both Carpenter and Barnard moved to the north parish of Coventry as the land became available. There are still a few Carpenter descendants here but I dont think any Barnards. I dont think the remaining Carpenters know about past details. I am new to the internet too. I will be intouch with you unless thru some error I lose you. Loretta grandma_upnorth@hotmail.com ****** Subj: Re: CARPENTER Date: 9/11/98 6:21:35 PM Central Daylight Time From: GeneZub Secondary sources I've seen do indicate that Benjamin[4] of Northampton, Mass., and Coventry, Conn., was the son of William[3] (William[2-1]) of Rehoboth. (Ignore the numbering initiated by Amos B. Carpenter and followed by others [e.g., Bowen, HIST. OF WOODSTOCK], which assigns generational number [1] to a William born about 1540; he not only didn't immigrate but wasn't the father of the elder William [b. ca. 1576] who did.) I don't have copies of the page(s) of Amos Carpenter's A GENEALOGICAL HISTORY OF THE REHOBOTH BRANCH OF THE CARPENTER FAMILY IN AMERICA that deal with Benjamin, so I don't know what evidence he presents to support the contention that this Benjamin was he of the same name born at Rehoboth, 20 October 1663, son of William[3] and Priscilla (Bennet) Carpenter. A shared forename is, of course, insufficient. As you may know, Amos Carpenter's work is fraught with errors. But insofar as he indicates his sources (which he does occasionally but not always accurately) and/or transcribes or quotes from a relevant document, he provides the reader with a rationale for his postulating a particular link and the opportunity to check his work (which you should by all means do). While there doesn't appear to be any record of William[3]'s son Benjamin as an adult in Rehoboth (compatible with possible migration--or early death), I notice that none of Northampton/Coventry Benjamin's children is named William, Priscilla, or Miriam (the last, Rehoboth Benjamin's stepmother). While the names of children Amos, Eliphalet, and Rebecca match those of three of Rehoboth Benjamin's brother John[4]'s children, that's not sufficient, either. Does the Northampton marriage record of Benjamin Carpenter and Hannah Strong say that he's of Rehoboth? What about the deed of Benjamin's first (if any) land purchase at Northampton? Simply because you find it stated repeatedly in the secondary literature (including the Internet) that your Benjamin was the son of William[3] doesn't make it so. Insist on primary evidence that is preferably direct; circumstantial evidence will do if it's strong and abundant. (One such circumstantial item--but one only--would be the names of children Amos, Eliphalet, and Rebecca.) If you determine that secondary sources are correct in stating that your Benjamin is part of the Rehoboth family, you should obtain all the sources cited in my two GenForum Carpenter postings of 3/24 (I see you posted a follow-up to one of them). There's a lot of erroneous information and speculation stated as fact out there concerning the early Rehoboth Carpenters and their ancestry; you must be careful not to be taken in by it. James2 KIDDER, born 1626 in East Grinstead, Sussex Co, England; died April 16, 1676 in Billerica, Middlesex Co, MA. He was the son of 896. James1 KIDDER and 897. Elizabeth. He married 449. Anna MOORE 1649 in Cambridge ,Middlesex, MA. 449. Anna MOORE, born 1630 in England; died 1691 in Billerica, Middlesex Co, MA. She was the daughter of 898. Francis MOORE and 899. Katherine MONFORD. Notes for James2 KIDDER: James's baptism is not recorded in the East Grinstead parish registers, as is believed by his descendants. He may have been related to Stephen Kidder who had tried to establish a settlement in 1633 at Newichewanock (now South Berwick), York Co, Maine. It is not known why this colony failed. I cannot find a relationship between these two men, but James did name his sixth son Stephen. There are no Stephen Kidders in the surviving entries of the parish registers of East Grinstead or Maresfield in Sussex. James was of Cambridge, MA 1649, but his means of coming to New England is unknown. It is believed he did so for the strength of his Puritan sympathies. In 1653 he leased a 289 acre farm in West Cambridge from Deacon Nathaniel Sparhawk, on the north shore of the Monotony River and Fresh Pond (near the present-day Arlington). James and his wife, Anna, were admitted to full communion of the Church of Cambridge and seven of their children were baptised there. By 1656 he was living in Shawshin (now Billerica). In 1662 he was recorded as a juror in Cambridge and the same year made sergeant of the militia company at Billerica. In 1675, during King Philip's War, his company kept guard over a small tribe of Indians at Wameset (now part of Lowell) and soon after this James was appointed to command a garrison house that protected seven families, including his own. He subsequently received several tracts of land from the church or town, including a tract of 60 acres south-east of Fox Hill (thought to have been occupied by his son, James, in later years), 31 acres in what is now part of Tewkesbury and 2 1/2 acres on the highway adjoining his house lot, running to Concord River. He died at Billerica 16 Apr 1676. One of James's great-grandsons, Samuel Kidder (1734-1776) related the story of James's death to his grandchildren: James died as the result of wounds received in a skirmish with Indians who were making a foray against the town of Billerica. He did not die on the day, but instead several days later. His name does not appear on the list of those killed in the skirmish ******** Christine VanKleeck, vanklecm@catskill.net 29. Buried in South Parish Cem., Norwell. Occupation: tanner. Humphrey came to Plymouth in 1628 with his wife and eldest son John, perhaps also a second John, and tradition would have him bring two more from a part of England hitherto undetermined where he had been a tanner. He removed to Scituate in 1634 and was one of the founders of the church there in Jan 1635. He wa constable, rep. in 1640, 1652, and 1653.[4] "Humphery Turner arrived, with his family, in Plymouth 1628. He had a house lot assigned him 1629, and he erected a house and resided there until 1633 probably; the latter being the date of they laying out of his house lot on Kent street, viz, the 4th. lot from the corner of Satuit brook. The farm, however, on which he resided, was east of Colman's hills, near the spot occupied by his descendant James Turner. Ther house was on the side of the road next the hill. He also had 80 acres granted by the freemen of Scituate, at the place now known as Union bridge on the west side of North river in 1636. This land remains in possession of his descendants. Humphery Turner erected a tannery as early as 1636. He was a usefula and enterprising man in the new settlement, and often employed in public business. His wife was Lydia Gamer, who deceased before her husband. He died 1673, and left children named in his will, in the following order, 'John, Joseph, young son John, Daniel, Nathaniel, Thomas, daughter Mary Parker--daughter Lydia Doughty--Grandchildren, Humphrey (son of Thomas) Mary Doughty--Jonathan, Joseph and Ezekiel (sons of John, sen.) and Abigail, daughter of Nathaniel.' Executors Nathaniel and young son John. These all left families except Joseph."[20] Deane mentions that a genealogy of the Turners was prepared by Charles Turner Jr. "Samuel Humphrey Turner, of the seventh generation, now [1852] owns and occupies the old farm in Scituate where Humphrey Turner lived and died."[32] He was one of the seventeen organizers of the Church of Scituate 18 Jan 1634. He was a constable, surveyor of highways, grand and traverse juryman. He was a Deputy to the Colony Court for 13 years between 1640 and 1654 excepting 1643. He assisted in fixing the bounds of teh Hatherly grant; was on the committee to dispose of lands in the Two-Mile, and, with two others, was chosen to protect the 'common lands' of the town against trespassers. In 1636 when the great lots along North River, of 60 and 80 acres each, were granted to the earliest settlers, Humphrey Turner received a lot of 80 acres adjoining that of Edward Foster on the east and Ephraim Kempton (later John James) on the west, upon which his eldest son, John Turner, Sr., settled in 1645.[1] On 24 Oct 1618 when Humphrey was 25, he married Lydia Gamer, daughter of Richard Gaymer (-Oct 1613) & Margaret Mason (-2 Jul 1602), in Sandon, Essex, Eng. Born ca 1602 in England. Lydia was baptized in Terling, Essex, Eng. on 18 May 1602.[6] Lydia died in Scituate, MA bef 28 Feb 1670; she was 68. Joseph was baptized in First Parish Church, Scituate on 1 Jan 1637.[24] Joseph died in Scituate, MA on 1 Nov 1715; he was 78.[6] Joseph was "called by Pratt 'a scapegoat and ne'er-do-well' in his younger years; retrieved his reputation by his services in King Philip's War, in which he was an Ensigh. He was severely wounded in the expedition against the Narragansetts in 1673. On his return to Scituate the twon 'chose Serj. John Damon to go with Joseph Turner and procure a cure for him; also to support him at the town's expense so lon as he liveth.' He recovered, and rejoined the troops under Governor Winslow, and was at the stroming of the Narragansett fort 19 Dec 1675. In 1681 Joseph Turner, having served in the Narragansett fight, is freed from military duty. He was unmarried."[1] 339vii.Nathaniel (ca1639-1715)340viii.Daniel (ca1641-) ---sources: 1. L.
