Introduction

Given the recent publicity surrounding the Mars Curiosity rover, and the fact that the surface of Mars looks in many ways similar to deserts found here on Earth, the artifact I created for Project 1 is a combination of part of a panoramic image taken by Curiosity and a scene from the classic movie Lawrence of Arabia.

Creation Process

The first part of the process of putting Lawrence and his companion on Mars was to cut them out of the original image with the scissors tool from the project.

From here, I saved copies of the image with the selection contours, and the selection mask.

Then, by running the command:

> convert lawrence.tga lawrence_mask.tga -compose CopyOpacity -composite lawrence_cutout.png

I was able to generate an image containing only the cutouts.

From here, I opened the Mars photo in GIMP, and opened the cutout photo as a new layer in the image. Then, using the move, scale, and perspective tools, I positioned the pair of cutouts such that they are traveling off into the distance on their camels.

However, after positioning, I noticed quickly that without any sort of shadow, the placement of the two travelers looks somewhat awkward. To remedy this, I re-imported the cutouts on a new layer, and using the perspective tool, adjusted the new layer so that they provided reasonable fake shadows.

Result

The final image containing both cutouts, their shadows, and snippets of the Curiosity rover itself, does a highly satisfactory job of embodying my original vision for my artifact, combining modern science with classic film.
