CS/INFO 431/631: Web Information Systems

Students are expected to maintain the utmost level of academic integrity in the course. Any violation of the code of academic integrity will be penalized severely, and can lead to failing the course.

Plagiarism deserves special mention here. Including text from other sources in a reaction paper without quoting it and providing a proper citation constitutes plagiarism it is a serious form of academic misconduct. This includes cases in which no full sentence has been copied from the original source, but large amounts of text have been closely paraphrased without proper attribution. To get a better sense for what is allowed, it is highly recommended that students consult the excellent document at http://plagiarism.arts.cornell.edu/tutorial/index.cfm. This is a very serious issue; instances of plagiarism will very likely result in failing the course.

Plagiarism also applies to project work. There are numerous programming examples available on the web and obviously students are encouraged to consult and use the web in their work. However, use of code either via simple copying or borrowing of ideas and/or structure, must be noted with an attribution in the code comments. Using the work of another student, either current or one enrolled in the course previously, to complete a project will be considered a violation of academic integrity and will very likely result in failing the course.
