Usage Notes for your Laptop
You have been given two network cards: A card for the wireless network and a card for a regular ethernet.
- The wireless card can be used free of charge on the Cornell Red Rover System. When
you first attempt to use it you will be asked your netid and password.
Consult http://www.cit.cornell.edu/redrover
for coverage information and more details.
- The regular ethernet cards can be used wherever you like provided you have
valid network access. In Upson, you can use these cards inside the lab. You will need
approval from the technicians in Upson 311 before being able to use the jacks in the hallway. The
consultants there have requested, though, that you use your wireless card instead when in the
building, so that they are not burdened with 40+ students asking for authorization.
- If you have any problems with the laptop setup, do not ask the technicians in
Upson 311 for help. Your first choice should be to ask your peers in the class. If they
cannot help, ask the TAs. Only as a last resort ask the technicians in Upson 311.
- Back up the data files on your laptop to another computer regularly. If you
somehow misconfigure your laptop, erase important files, or uninstall some important
piece of software, we cannot help recover this information. The
only choice that you will have is to complete reinstall all of the software on the computer as you
did when you received the laptop, and this process will erase all existing software and
files on your computer.
