Installing Swindle and Dr Swindle
Instructions for Macintosh PPC

The central page for this whole process is available from Eli's page. You should read over it and do what it
says. The purpose of this document, however, is to clearly list the actual
steps needed to install on a PowerMac. For reference, it took me less than
thirty minutes on a G3/233 the first time I did it, and I took time to write
these instructions between steps. If you read very quickly and have a good
internet connection, you should be able to finish in 10-15 minutes.
It requires a few very basic skills:
- Use of the web to download files
- Double-clicking (see, I told you this wasn't hard)
- Picking up files and dropping them onto other files
- Making aliases (optional)
- Renaming files (optional)
Ready?
-
The first thing to download the DrScheme package. Just
choose the appropriate responses in the boxes on the page here.
If you get a cryptic message asking what to do with the file, just save it
to your hard drive.
-
You should have downloaded a file called plt.ppc-mac.sit.bin.
It may have already decompressed automatically (look for a folder called
plt). If it hasn't, you'll need to decompress by dragging the
downloaded file onto StuffIt Expander (there should be a copy of StuffIt
somewhere with your Bear Access files, or you can download it from Aladdin Systems).
-
Double-click the Setup PLT application. It can be found in the
plt folder that appeared when you decompressed the downloaded
file. When it gives you a weird box talking about "Argument", just click
"OK". Now sit back and watch for a minute; it will create about a dozen
files. Don't get impatient, sometimes it looks like it isn't doing
anything for a little bit. Don't quit until it says something like:
Done setting up
[total memory used: 3039244 bytes.]
[total collections: 114.]
-
Next, download the Swindle extension, following the same procedure as
before (except you don't need StuffIt this time). It's
here.
-
Take the swindle.plt file you just downloaded and drop it onto
the Setup PLT application. It will act pretty much the same as
before (click "OK" and watch stuff scroll up the screen). Again, you can
quit when you see something like the following:
Creating the Swindle (console) launcher...
Creating the DrSwindle (GUI) launcher...
Done setting up
[total memory used: 1736712 bytes.]
[total collections: 48.]
-
There will now be two new programs in the plt folder, called
Swindle and DrSwindle. These are the programs you
will be using for the course. Make sure to keep them in the same folder as
all the other files that are part of the package. You can rename the
folder if you don't like plt, and feel free to move it to a more
appropriate location on your hard drive. Just make sure you keep the
contents of the folder exactly how they are.
-
Now, there's one final optional section (not very difficult either). If
you would like to make it slightly more convenient to launch the programs,
read on. If you don't mind opening up the plt folder every
time, you can stop now.
-
Good for you. This part is very quick. The first thing is to highlight
Swindle and DrSwindle (single-click on one of the
files, then hold down shift and single-click the other) and choose
Make Alias from the File menu. You'll now have two
'aliases'. Double-clicking an alias is the same as double-clicking the
file it is an alias for.
-
Now the last step is to move those two aliases somewhere convenient (by
picking them up and dragging them). There are two places that come to
mind. You can put them on the desktop (where your hard drive and the Trash
are) by just dragging them onto it. If, instead, you'd like to put them on
the Apple Menu (the one in the upper left corner of the screen), just open
up the System Folder (it's on your hard drive) and drag them
into the Apple Menu Items folder you'll find there.
