10/16/2002: Homework 3 is out, due next wednesday. I also added links to SED documents on the web. You should have a look at them to get some experience with SED for the homework.

10/15/2002: Non unexpectedly, I'm getting a lot of questions about Part I Q3 (and Part II Q3). For a hint as to how to use \(,\),\1,\2, etc, look at the following notes cribbed from the appendix of some documentation. Look espectially at the bit about 'tagged regular expressions'.

10/11/2002: Extension on homework 2 until thursday the 17th, at noon.

10/9/2002: Homework 2 is out. Due next wednesday.

10/7/2002: In answer to two questions asked in class this morning:

10/3/2002: Typo in Homework 1 that was handed out. To submit part I, invoke ~cs114/bin/submit-hw1. The homework has been corrected.

10/2/2002: Homework 1, as well as the notes for the first two lectures, can be found below. Apologies for speeding through some of the material this morning. As I said in class, the class on Friday is cancelled, and the deadline for the homework is monday, so I at least wanted to give a feel for permissions. Details can be found in the notes below, which I strongly recommend you read.

10/2/2002: The accounts for students registered as of a week or so ago have been created on the CSUG machines. Please refer here for how to setup the initial password for your account. Note that you do not need to go through this step if you already have a CSUG account because of another course you are taking this semester. For general info on the CSUG lab, see here. The UNIX machine we are actually using is babbage.csuglab.cornell.edu. From any of the CSUG machines, run telnet babbage.csuglab.cornell.edu. Your username on babbage is your netid, and your password is the same as you CSUG password. (If you want to connect to babbage from outside the CSUG lab, you need to use ssh.)
