First meeting

Orientation sessions will be announced soon. One should be toward the end of the first week. If you attend the first lecture (see below), you need not come to an orientation session.

Lectures

In an attempt to provide a steady structured approach to this class for those who want it, lectures with powerpoint handouts will be given

  • Tuesday and Thursday, 4:25, Olin Hall 255

The room holds 200 people, and almost 600 are enrolled in the class, so not everyone will be able to get in. First lecture: 25 January.

The lectures will parallel those in CS1110, which covers the same material, although we will be able to cover more here and go into more details because everyone has some programming experience. We expect students who take this route to attend regularly and complete the course within the first 5 weeks.

Another way to get the same material is to attend CS1110 regularly. It has two sections:

  • Tuesday and Thursday, 9:05, Hollister B14
  • Tuesday and Thursday, 11:15, Hollister B14

Finally, you can see the videos of lectures in CS1110 from last semester on www.cs.cornell.edu/videonote. Click "Click for Cornell" in the upper right corner, give your Cornell netid and password, and select Spring 2011 and group CS 1110. This semester will follow the same lecture sequence, essentially, as last semester.

We will not schedule regular discussion sections; in the past, they have not been attended well at all.

Quizzes

Please complete quiz 0 on the CMS for the course. Please take the other quizzes in the ACCEL Lab during the times that a consultant is there (see below). Unless the consultant is busy, it should take you 5 minutes to take the test and 2 minutes for the consultant to look at it and tell you the result. These quizzes are used just to ensure that you know some important concepts and definitions.

Lab

There is one "lab", which will show you how to read/write files on your hard drive. When you have done it, show the results to a consultant, who will look at it and then change your record to indicate that you have done it. See below for the times that the consultants are available in the ACCEL computer labs.

Computer labs

The ACCEL Lab, reached through the Carpenter Library, will be open for CS1130 on times posted here.

Consultants will be present to answer questions, to grade assignments, to give and check quizzes, and to give tests. Check first in the Green room, then in the Red or Orange room. We do not know how many students will be going to consultant hours, so we do not know how many consultants to hire. Things will be fluid for the first week or two.
