Installation Tips

CodeWarrior

Windows 95/NT Version

CodeWarrior Pro 2 requires that Internet Explorer 4 be installed to support Java debugging. At least for this release, CW and IE share a common Java virtual machine. One doesn't have to install the "active desktop" update with IE4, fortunately, just the browser itself.

  1. Completely uninstall any previous version of CodeWarrior. There's an installer/uninstaller program in CodeWarrior's folder or the add/remove programs control panel should work. Leave Internet Explorer in place -- it doesn't have to be uninstalled.
  2. Install Internet Explorer 4 if not already present. An appropriate installer is on the CodeWarrior Pro 2 Windows 95/NT Tools CD. Insert the Tools CD, then

That should install IE4 and may launch it with the active desktop interface. If you're superstitious, you might want to restart windows at this point to be sure everything is cleaned up.

  3. Next, remove the active desktop stuff if it was installed and you don't want it (strongly suggested). An easy way to tell if the active desktop is installed is to double click on the "My Computer" icon at the upper-left corner of the screen. If this launches Internet Explorer, you've got it; if you get the regular Windows view of the computer, you're safe. (The CodeWarrior IE4 installers seem to install the active desktop on Windows 95, but not on Windows NT). To get rid of the active desktop stuff if it's there,

When the uninstall is done, restart windows. Remnants of the IE4 desktop interface may still appear. Close them after selecting any "don't open this automatically again" options that are present.

  4. Install CodeWarrior. Insert the CW Pro 2 CD and launch setup. Click yes/next/ok/etc. until the Installation Type window appears. Select custom and click next until you get to the Choose Options window. Select the following options:

Click ok/next/yes/finish until the installation starts.

  5. Install Sun's Java Environment. This version of CodeWarrior includes some tools that require at least the runtime part of Sun's Java environment, and the CodeWarrior installer displays a dialog box when it's done to remind you of this. Finish the installer, then open a window for the CD. Open the folder \Extras\Sun Microsystems. Double click the jre114
icon to install the Java runtime environment (about 2.5MB). If you've got the room and want it, you can install the full Sun Java 1.1.4 developer kit by clicking the jdk114 icon instead of jre114 (about 25MB).

Macintosh Version

Some of you are using the old version of code warrior (Code Warrior Pro 1) and then trying to use the CUCS additions we have on our web page. These are not compatible. If you did not already register your software with Metrowerks when you bought it, you should do so now. By doing this you will receive the new version for free. In the meantime, you can use the libraries supplied to students last semester. These should be fine for at least the first two assignments.

Unfortunately, CodeWarrior Pro 2 is a lot bigger than previous releases. Part of this is due to the Java 1.1 support, which more than doubles the size of the Java libraries, but part of it is because the installer scripts include too much stuff. I'll try to get Metrowerks to fix this in future releases.

  1. Remove any previous version(s) of CodeWarrior. Delete any old CodeWarrior folder(s) and all of the things from the System Folder:
  2. Insert the CodeWarrior Pro 2 MacOS Tools CD and double click on the CWPro2 installer. Click ok/yes/accept until you get to the installer options window. Select the following options (some of these are implicitly selected by others, but it doesn't hurt to check off everything we need):

Click install, let the installer run, and restart when it's done.

  3. Install the MW Java 1.1.4 compiler update. Run the updater program that's included in this update. It should find and update the Java compiler automatically.
