Course Description
We review recent research on systems for database management and data analysis. For instance, we will cover topics such as data processing on emerging hardware architectures, novel query interfaces, visual data management, and database tuning via machine learning.
Each session features a presentation, either from one or two course participants or from an external speaker (from industry or academia). Presentations focus on one or two recent papers on related topics. Course participants are expected to actively participate in all presentations and to prepare between one and two presentation over the semester. Besides presentations, participants work on course projects in teams that relate to recent research in database systems.
Workload and Grading
- One to two presentations per student (30% of grade).
- Students present alone or in teams of two (a team presentation counts as half a presentation).
- Presentations focus on one or two recent papers from the database conferences.
- Alternatively, participants may present their own research if it connects to the course topic.
- Grading considers quality of slides and verbal explanations, as well as audience engagement.
- Course participation (30% of grade).
- Each course participant obtains one point per course lecture attended.
- One additional point per lecture for asking at least one relevant question.
- Course project (40% of grade).
- Teams of up to six students per project, one meeting per team and month (flexible).
- Projects are chosen within the first three weeks of the semester.
- Each team must provide a final report of six pages (in ACM sigconf format).
- Grading considers the quality of the report and of the project results.
