Econ 4760/Econ 6760/ CIS 5846: Decision Theory I
(Fall, 2008)
Breaking news:
- Dec. 13: Prof. Halpern hold office hours as usual on
Wednesday at 11, and can stay until 12:30 if there's demand.
Prof. Blume's office hours need to be moved: they will be held 4-5:30 on
Wednesday. The final is on Thursday, 2-4:30 PM, in Malott 251.
- Nov. 18: Prof. Blume's office hours on Nov. 24 and Dec. 1 are cancelled; so
are Vasu's office hours on Tuesday, Nov. 30, but Navin will be holding
office hours instead on that, 3-4, in Rhodes 657.
- Oct. 27: Grades and solutions for the prelim and HW2 are posted on
CMS. HW3 is posted here.
- Oct. 3: As we announced in class on Thursday, Prof. Blume will be
holding special office hours on Monday, 1:30 - 3. Also, both
Prof. Blume and Prof. Halpern will be cancelling office hours on
Oct. 13. Finally, as announced in class, your are not
responsible for knowing details of the paging algorithms and database
planning algorithms discussed in class. This is a course on decision
theory!
- Sept. 29: A number of issues:
- The prelim will be in class on Tuesday, Oct. 5. It will cover all
material taught up to yesterday (Sept. 28).
- There will be a makeup for the prelim on Monday afternoon,
Oct. 4. The time and place has yet to be determined, It is available
*only* if you would otherwise have three prelims on Oct. 5. If you are
interested in the makeup, let us know (and let us know what the
conflicts are).
- Academic integrity: As was clearly stated at the beginning of the
course, you can collaborate with anyone you like when you do the
homework, but you *must* write up the homework yourself. Going forward,
please list everyone you collaborated with on your homework, and (if you
collaborated with someone), you should state that you wrote up the
homework yourself. We would prefer not to have to do this, but there
seem to be a number of instances where people are handing in solutions
with paragraphs that are almost identical. This is inconsistent with
writing up the solution yourself, which makes it a violation of academic
integrity.
- Solutions: Solutions for HW1, as well as your grades, are now
available on CMS.
- Course notes: updated course notes are posted on the web.
- Sept. 21: Yet another clarification: In question 4, we said that
x &ge. y if it's not the case that x > y. As Is stnadard in
mathematics, you should read that "if" as an "if and only if".
- Sept. 14: Two clarifications on the homework:
- In problem 2, you should discuss separately whether Sen's alpha
and Sen's beta.
- In problem 5, it assumes that > is a partial order. But a partial order is normally transitive and reflexive. We do *not* want to assume that
> is reflexive. So just assume that > is transitive (but not necessarily negatively transitive).
- Sept. 8, 2010: Homework 1 is now posted (click on the homework
link), as are Professor Blume's course notes (click on the course notes
link). Finally, office hours start today (click on the course
information link for times).
- Sept. 4, 2010: Class on Thursday, Sept. 9 is cancelled, due to Rosh
Hashana (Jewish New Year)
