Topics in Databases (and some Nostalgia)

Jennifer Widom
 Stanford University

Speaking at my alma mater offers an excuse for nostalgia, so I'll provide a brief history of my Computer Science career to date, highlighting some of its contrasts: theory versus systems, programming languages versus databases, research lab versus academia, east "coast" versus west coast. I'll spend most of the talk discussing some of my work in the database area over the last decade, including favorite topics from the past (active databases; managing semistructured data and XML) and some current research directions (data streams; approximate caching).
