We have outlined three different mechanisms that enter into the creation of intelligent systemsÑcomputation, storage and communications. Advanced information systems will integrate these systems mechanisms to a greater degree than is common today. For each of these three mechanisms we have presented some new ideas that acheive greater modularity and extensibility than previous approaches.
