1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Reviews from http://www.autoweb.com/reviews/summary.htm

Best Features: Good vision and comfortable seats.

Worst Features: Noises and clunks, rear end whine (repaired twice), poor gas mileage (no code, therefore no problem), surge when accelerating (ditto), arrogance of Daimler-Chrysler.

Who would like this Vehicle: people who are oblivious to driving environment and need vehicles for point a to point b transportation

Overall Review: Very poor quality, noisy, bad experience with manufacturer and with multiple dealers who try to keep it running. Daimler-Chrysler has refused to acknowledge that the vehicle is a lemon. No results from arbitration attempt due to lack of documentation. Arbitration was a joke since board was comprised of those who feel that as long as the vehicle is drivable, its OK.

Best Features: attractive, creature features, stereo system

Worst Features: everything-this thing is a mechanical nightmare!

Who would like this Vehicle: anyone who already works at a jeep dealership because they could get their service done while at work!

Overall Review: WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS VEHICLE TO ANYONE! Entire head replaced, drive shaft replaced, two transmission defects repaired. Rough idle and stalling are still not repaired - its in the shop again as we speak. 20,000k and $34000...Chrylser should be ashamed of this product and their lack of concern. Ive requested a replacement vehicle (dealership has been good to me) and serv. mgr is advocating on my behalf. Most amazing is that others have had the same problems as mine, but have been told its normal. Other than the idle problem, mine have been repairable - 2nd opinions needed in some cases.

Best Features: Infinity radio is very nice, it helps to drown out all the other noises the truck makes.

Worst Features: Brakes, brakes, brakes, transmission, rear end, door alignment, general workmanship and poor quality control.

Who would like this Vehicle: Some dealer that claims they are a Chrysler 5 Star repair center that somehow makes a living on suckers that have to keep bringing their trucks in while still under warranty.

Overall Review: Where do I begin? Avoid this vehicle, DO NOT BUY. The brakes were pulsating very badly at 5,000 miles and fixed (rotors resurfaced)... then at 14,000 fixed again, finally at 20,000 rotors resufaced once again and UPDATED brake pads put on. No more pulsating but now the back brakes are squeaking like mad. When you make tight turns, like in a parking lot, it feels like the front tires are going to collapse in on their rims. The drivers side mirror spring broke. The passenger side front door wasnt aligned and was hitting the back door when the back door was opened or shut. Center console latch broke (I found out this was another UPDATED part), of course the part was not in stock so I had to go back to dealer another time. Transmission whines when accelerating, clunks when shifting from park, and the car used to stall when shifting from reverse to drive. Drivers side front window has bad air leak. Front right tweeter wiring was screwed up. Back end hops around quite a bit when taking a curve on anything but the smoothest pavement. I am really sick of finding out there has been an UPDATED part. Why not be honest and call them RECALLS and fix them all at once so the consumers dont have to discover them one by one. Just avoid this SUV and at all costs DO NOT buy a used one.

Best Features: Good acceleration, sleek styling

Worst Features: Rough shifting, extremely loud clunking noise

Who would like this Vehicle: Nobody

Overall Review: The worst vehicle I have ever driven. Have had it for 6 months and has been in the shop 6 times. Clunking noise is awful and Chysler and Kirkland, WA dealership dont seem to care, they got their sale. They said that the problem is normal and there is nothing they can do. Will never buy another Chrysler vehicle again!

Best Features: Smooth styling. Good powerplant.

Worst Features: Quality is pitiful. Brakes failed once, the rear door is misaligned. A/C went out on me today. It squeaks everywhere.

Who would like this Vehicle: You like Russian Roulette? Buy this car.

Overall Review: I have babied this vehicle since I got it. I do not take it off-road. I do not floor the gas. I change the oil and filter every 4K. I have taken it in for its regularly scheduled maintenance. And STILL, it is falling apart on me. This is the last Chrysler product I will ever buy. I do NOT recommend this vehicle. Try a posh Rodeo or 4Runner instead.

Best Features: V-8 Power; Quadra-Drive; Feel that you can go anywhere with aplomb (reliability concerns aside)

Worst Features: Quality control/reliability - alternator and transmission replaced w/in 3500 mile; driveline noises, vibrations and thumps; erratic shifting

Who would like this Vehicle: The adventuresome (both outdoors and in ownership); commuters in heavy traffic under inclement weather

Overall Review: Have serious second thoughts after some 5000 miles (alternator, transmission, headlights alignment, rightside mirror, driveline NV concerns. Quality control is questionable. (See the range of review comments) Right mirror spring snapped; part is not in dealer stock. Lots of driveline noise, vibrations and thumps. Adaptive transmission program causes rough shifting in heavy traffic. Buy extended warranty package. Still has side to side rocking motion with high pressure gas shocks.

Best Features: Is a distant cousin to past quality vehicles.

Worst Features: Too many bugs to mention. Severe shaking when turning tight. Transfer case problems. etc. etc. etc.

Who would like this Vehicle: No one I know, with the possible exception of mechanics looking to make alot of money.

Overall Review: I previously owned a 93 Grand Limited with straight six and loved it. The 99 Grand V8 4x4 has alot of known problems. Ask to see dealer advisories.

Best Features: Performance and ride are very good. Solid car with good styling.

Worst Features: Quadradrive... It doesn't work and Jeep will not warranty having it fixed. Will not even disassemble to find problem. Customer service and warranty stink.

Who would like this Vehicle: No one who is looking for dependability.

Overall Review: It is a nice car, it is too bad that a major Co. has as poor a warranty service system as they have. 1 person can say no on warranty and there is no appeals process. Even when they know of all the problems that they have had with the QuadraDrive. Great system. It just won't stay together. Howls, clunks, vibrates and will not work as advertised.

Best Features: Great looks, nice ride, fun car when it works

Worst Features: Very unreliable - only 1.5 years old, and already repainted, new transmission, 2 new power windows, rotors warped

Who would like this Vehicle: People who don't mind frequent trips to the service department

Overall Review: Like the car, hate the constant maintenance problems - Dealership has been very helpful, but doesn't eliminate frustration of buying a very expensive, very unreliable car

Best Features: I like the looks of the Grand Cherokee.

Worst Features: Rear end went out. Our brakes squeak constantly although they were repaired. The four wheel drive did not engage which needed to be fixed. We really had a lemon! We only have 23,000 miles on it. We also had problems with the shocks

Who would like this Vehicle: People who do not mind a bumpy ride! Our friends feel as if they are riding in a truck.

Overall Review: I would like to see the mechanical problems solved.

Best Features: Overall styling, although interior is boring; looks great on the road; superior off-road performance

Worst Features: Mechanical features, i.e. rear-wiper motor (which I had replaced at 3000 miles), clunky transmission, pulsating brakes, gas mileage

Who would like this Vehicle: 20-somethings looking to get noticed, large families, salespeople who need a lot of cargo space

Overall Review: I really do like my Grand Cherokee, really, although I am somewhat concerned about future mechanical problems. After attending Jeep 101, Im convinced that the off-road performance is superlative to the other comparable SUVs on the market. However, for those of us who practically live in our vehicles, the interior should be more sleek for such a pricey vehicle. The Infinity stereo package is nice, but still lacks that extra something.

Best Features: ride and comfort

Worst Features: anything mechanical. brakes, transmission, etc

Who would like this Vehicle: a very bored mechanic that likes being stranded on the side of the road in a $36,000.00 vehicle

Overall Review: run away from your Jeep dealer! Run fast and hard

Best Features: Excellent Ride, Body fits well, Infinity Stereo is A+

Worst Features: Drive Train, Dealer has no parts, small gas tank.

Who would like this Vehicle: Those that are technology buffs who generally like quality.

Overall Review: New brake rotors, 10 trips to fix the transfer case then replaced, new rear differential, new rotors again, in shop now for front differential/transmission problems. Otherwise rides great, 30,000 miles, never off road, reasonable mileage, good electronics. Dealers need to get a clue on customer service early in the process. Chrysler should have jumped in early on the problems instead of letting the customers be the proving ground.

Best Features: stylish

Worst Features: transmission, 4x4

Who would like this Vehicle: Couples with only 1 or 2 children

Overall Review: After only 4 mos. and 5,600 mi. I am not happy. In shop 3Xs, bearings/shims replaced, fuel pump replaced, transmission CLANKS when going from Park-Drive-Reverse, not enough room here to list all the other problems, there were 12 different items which were addressed and fixed! My second Jeep, first one was great, this one???? The dealer I bought from was Archer Jeep/Houston, Tx. Gen.Manager says its MY problem! It goes back to shop this week, again! They say they dont know whats wrong?? that all the 99s do that! Then they should all be fixed! I want some sort of satisfaction here, maybe I should buy a Ford or Chevrolet, I can spend my $30,000 elsewhere!
