Course Description

CS 100B is a 4 credit course that introduces fundamental computer programming and problem-solving concepts. Programming projects are written in Java. Some assignments will also use Matlab. CS 100B assumes no prior knowledge of computing and has no prerequisite computer science courses. (However, a majority of the students in recent years have had some programming experience prior to taking CS100B.) The course may be taken for a letter grade or, if your college or program advisor allows it.

Sections

The sections are used for the self-grading of the written assignments and you should attend unless you are absolutely sure of a 100% score. Subject to room overflow, you may attend any section.

Written Assignments

There are twelve written assignments each involving about four problems that require a Java (or Matlab) solution. You do not have to run these. Written assignments are discussed in section and solutions are posted on the web. You can skip two written assignments without penalty. Written assignments are graded for completion and not correctness. They are designed to prepare you for the programming assigments and exams. Partners are not allowed. The written assignment for a given week must be submitted either in lecture or section. They are returned in the Carpenter lab.

Programming Assignments

There are six programming assignments that involve the computer. A given assignment may involve several decoupled problems or a single problems with several parts. Two-person teams are permitted.

Handouts

Hardcopies of all the assignments are brought to lecture once or twice. Remainders will be placed in the rack outside Upson 303. Copies will also be available off the CS100b web site.
